ART in Medellin

Medellin has undergone a remarkable socioeconomic transformation in recent decades, and has emerged as a center of creativity, occupying the second most consolidated art network in the country, with programs and proposals as powerful as they are constant. They celebrate the most popular expressions, which speak of the material and historical conjunctures of the city: its geography and geology, architecture, but also of the complexity of its social fabric and its multiple layers.

In the capital of Antioquia, the artistic sector is relatively mature. Since 1978, the Modern Art Museum of Medellin (MAMM) has provided an open portal to the experience of the region’s traditions and its memory. In 2015, it reopened to the public with an expansion in its infrastructure, adapting its rooms over the former steel factory (1930) where the museum has housed its exhibitions since 2009. The project was eighty percent financed by private industry, as part of a major urban rezoning initiative of the former industrial zone of Medellin today known as Barrio Colombia.
