Jorge Luis Vaca

Artista de la Universidad de los Andes con énfasis en Medios Electrónicos, especialista en Historia del Arte (M1) y Magister en Artes Electrónicas (M2). Estuvo vinculado como investigador asociado al Proyecto “Documents of the 20th Century Latin American and Latino Art”, coordinado por el International Center for the Arts of the Americas, oficina inscrita al Museo de Bellas Artes de Houston, Texas. Su trabajo de investigación y creación se enfoca sobre la construcción de Memoria a diferentes niveles, acercándose desde lo individual y hacia lo colectivo a la Historia nacional por medio del arte.

En este sentido su obra busca señalar las diferentes relaciones donde se evidencia el medio, entendiéndolo como un elemento vital para la construcción del discurso y el relato, haciéndolo evidente. Su obra ha sido exhibida en varias exposiciones individuales y colectivas en museos y galerías de arte de Bogotá́, Berlín, Buenos Aires, Ciudad Juárez, Madrid, Manizales, Medellín y Tokio. Ha sido colaborador en publicaciones tales como Errata#, El Astrolabio y Revista Cronopio y conferencista y tallerista en espacios tales como el MAMBO, el Festival Internacional de la Imagen e ISEA, realizado por la Universidad de Caldas y Plataforma Bogotá. A su vez, ha sido premiado nacional e internacionalmente dentro del marco de convocatorias como la Feria del Millón 2016 (Premio Argos a la Excelencia Artística),de la Convocatoria de Arte Electrónico (2016) de la Outsiders Art Foundation en la Feria de Arte JustMad, el Salón de Arte Joven 2015 de la Fundación Gilberto Alzate Avendaño y la Convocatoria Es Cultura Local 2020 del Idartes (2020) en Madrid y Bogotá, respectivamente.

The construction of memory within a society allows us to understand how this element is defined and how the future is built. Thus, within my artistic practice I find significant and relevant to explore the discourse built around the identity of my country and the ideal of the nation; an element that I believe must still be explored and articulated in order to configure an identity that is bound to the political. In this sense, my work uses a series of elements that seek to generate metaphors that allow me to propose reflections around History and the specific Narrative that defines Colombia as a Nation, acknowledging an articulation in this particular discourse and recent History.

Using materials such as wood, electrical and electronic elements – such as motors and printers on media such as paper – I generate different kinds of research that allow me to propose works whose central interest is to remember through simple repetitive actions that question elements linked to the national and individual identity of the public. In that sense, I seek to controvert the National Imaginary, generating tension by focusing on specific points in History and composing experiences that allow the visitors to think about their present and how to build their future.
